As the 70s were coming to a close and the fire of disco was dimming, Fantastic Four’s 1978 outing B.Y.O.F. turned to the emerging R&B sounds that would define a wide swath of 80s music. Led by the incomparable Parliament Funkadelic, new studio tools and instruments were melding with the organic grooves of the past to create a forward-thinking, futuristic sound. A sound that, for the Fantastic Four, is every bit as righteous as anything around at the time. Maybe even a bit ahead of its time, B.Y.O.F. is yet another lost classic from Westbound that’s ready for new ears.

Originally a traditional soul group in the 1960s, The Fantastic Four joined the Westbound roster after a stint in semi- retirement. They returned with an updated sound for the 70s, simultaneously staying true to their gorgeous soul roots while incorporating the dominant sounds of gritty Blacksploitation soundtracks and the smooth, ascendant aesthetic of disco--to artful and sophisticated effect. ... more
